Whispers of a Budgie by Nilshree Yelulkar
Some books make you think; this one made me pause and look differently at the invisible work happening inside our homes.
Whispers of a Budgie is a heartfelt tribute to homemakers and the countless responsibilities they carry, often without a designation, salary, appraisal or even acknowledgement. The book’s central message is simple but powerful: being a homemaker is not “doing nothing”; it is holding together the ecosystem that allows everyone else to do what they do.
Three thoughts that stayed with me:
1. Invisible work is still work.
Managing a home requires planning, coordination, emotional labour, problem-solving and endless responsibilities. We often recognize these skills in workplaces but overlook them at home.
2. Respect matters as much as remuneration.
Not every contribution can be measured in money. Recognition, gratitude and dignity are equally important; and should never be assumed to be automatic.
3. Every role deserves a voice.
The book encourages us to listen to what homemakers may silently feel, sacrifice and aspire to. That is particularly relevant to creators and professionals: behind every visible achievement, there is often someone whose contribution remains unseen.
At The Creative Hat, we believe creativity begins with observing people, listening to their stories and giving meaningful ideas a voice. Nilshree’s book reminded me that some of the most important stories are often the ones we don’t hear loudly enough.
